Growing up, I really thought I would have life figured out by 30.

Career. Love. Money. A home. My future.

I thought adulthood would eventually come with this magical moment where everything clicked and I could finally say, Okay, I know what I’m doing now.

Well…

I’m 30.

And I’m still figuring it out.

I Thought 30 Would Feel Different

When you’re younger, 30 sounds so grown-up.

I imagined that by now I’d know exactly who I was and what I wanted from life. I wouldn’t question every decision. I’d have some perfectly organized plan for where I was going next.

Instead, I’m still learning.

I’m still changing my mind.

I’m still discovering things about myself.

I’m still dreaming about what I want my future to look like.

And I’m realizing that maybe that’s completely normal.

We Grew Up With a Different Picture of Adulthood

A lot of millennials grew up believing life followed a pretty simple timeline:

Go to school.
Get a job.
Find someone.
Get married.
Buy a house.
Have a family.
Build a career.
Retire someday.

But adulthood hasn’t exactly gone according to that plan.

We’ve lived through recessions, rising housing costs, changing technology, social media, a pandemic, unstable careers, and a world that seems to change every five minutes.

At the same time, we’re constantly seeing other people’s lives online.

Someone bought a house.

Someone got married.

Someone had a baby.

Someone started a successful business.

Someone is traveling the world.

And suddenly you’re sitting there thinking:

Wait…am I behind?

Maybe I’m Not Behind

This is something I’m slowly learning.

Life isn’t a race.

There isn’t one timeline we’re all supposed to follow.

Maybe I don’t need to have everything figured out at 30.

Maybe I’m allowed to change.

I’m allowed to discover new interests.

I’m allowed to walk away from dreams that don’t fit me anymore.

I’m allowed to start over.

I’m allowed to have absolutely no idea what comes next.

Changing direction doesn’t mean I failed.

Sometimes it simply means I’ve grown.

Does Anyone Actually Figure It Out?

I’m starting to wonder if the biggest secret of adulthood is that nobody completely knows what they’re doing.

Maybe we just get better at navigating the unknown.

At 20, I thought I’d have the answers at 30.

Maybe at 40, I’ll look back at 30-year-old me and realize how much I still had to learn.

And maybe 50-year-old me will do the same thing to 40-year-old me.

That’s kind of beautiful when you think about it.

We’re never really finished becoming ourselves.

I’m Still Figuring It Out

I’m 30.

I don’t have everything figured out.

There are things I want that haven’t happened yet.

There are dreams I’m still working toward.

There are parts of myself I’m still discovering.

And yes, sometimes I wonder whether I’m doing adulthood completely wrong.

But I’m starting to realize something:

Maybe adulthood isn’t about finally having all the answers.

Maybe it’s learning to trust yourself even when you don’t know what’s coming next.

Maybe it’s being able to say:

I don’t know yet.

I’m learning.

I’m growing.

I’m still figuring it out.

And maybe I always will be.

Honestly?

I think that’s the point.

Welcome to the Millennial Mind—where we’re old enough to remember life before social media, young enough to still be figuring ourselves out, and slowly realizing there was never a rule saying we had to have it all together by 30.
